Scientist Marie Curie | Girls’ Tee
“You cannot hope to build a better world without improving the individuals. To that end, each of us must work for his own improvement and, at the same time, share a general responsibility for all humanity, our particular duty being to aid those to whom we think we can be most useful.” – Marie Curie
As the first female recipient of the prestigious Nobel Prize for her contribution to the discovery of polonium and radium, Marie Curie, to us, is a Founding Mother in the area of STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – for women and girls. To Mme. Curie, it wasn’t the discovery alone that motivated her. It was the impact that the application of her discovery could make on the world. In this case, it was uncovering the benefits of radium, which saved thousands of soldiers from suffering, or even death, during World War I. Mme. Curie is a testament to the capability of women and girls in the field of STEM.
“The most powerful determinant of whether a woman goes on in science might be whether anyone encourages her to go on.” – Professor Eileen Pollack, University of Michigan
