Few people are able to balance well a multitude of passions with their everyday responsibilities. Laura Burford from Richardson, Texas, is one such Modern Muse whom we call a modern-day Renaissance woman. Mother, wife, entrepreneur and actress, this lady proves that sharing your gifts and inspiring others can come in many forms and even from one person at any age!
Here is her story in her own words.
“As an entrepreneur, I am proudly partnered with Shaklee Corporation. We are the number one natural nutrition company in North America and a global leader in our industry. For 60 years, and we have been known for the purity and potency of our products, our integrity, and innovation.
“In my Shaklee business, I guide others to improve their physical health and also, for those who choose to join our team, I mentor them in creating an income while crafting lives of meaning and purpose.
“As entrepreneurs, we offer women a vehicle for achieving their own goals of financial stability rather than being a cog in a corporate wheel. Our team is supportive of one another’s growth – inspiring each other to reach higher to achieve whatever dreams we have imagined.
“I also work as a freelance actor. I have taught acting and voice for the stage, co-founded a theatre company, and performed in several original one-person shows portraying notable women of arts and letters.”
“I am motivated to do my part to end the economic disparity between men and women in our country by providing economic empowerment, especially for women. I grew up in the south in the 1950’s in a male dominated culture. Finding my voice and encouraging other women to do the same has been a key component in my adult life.
“There is definitely a glass ceiling for women in our country and in most of the world. Today, one in every three women in the U.S. is just a paycheck away from disaster if an emergency were to occur. At Shaklee we offer a custom-made path for the stay-at- home mom or anyone who wants unlimited earning potential.
“Also, I have a mission to support mothers who battle schools over behaviors of their children – who deal with issues such as childhood obesity, hyperactivity, asthma, and allergies by providing natural nutritional solutions and eco-friendly household products.
“In our country, we are overfed and undernourished. Seeing the difference Shaklee nutrition made in my family’s health was very motivating to me. We started on our health journey when our kids were ages 9 and 15. With the help of Shaklee supplements, their immune systems were strengthened so they were able to avoid picking up colds and flu. We also saw an improvement in their concentration when they were in school.
“I am motivated to provide healthier lives for everyone. My husband and I are now in our 60s, are maintaining our ideal weight, and have plenty of energy to lead very active lives. I decided to share Shaklee because I wanted to offer other people the benefits that my family has enjoyed. Our products support healthy weight, healthy nutrition, and a toxin-free home environment through earth-friendly cleaning products.”
How did you get to where you are and what challenges did/do you face?
“I was trained in theatre and have worked in the Dallas are for most of my professional life. There are some really fine actresses in this market, so getting cast can sometimes be challenging. For years I battled perfectionism and feelings of unworthiness. But through daily practice of yoga, meditation, and mindfulness, and with the loving support of my family and friends I have been able to excel in my art. I have gotten to participate in fabulous projects, each of which has challenged me to stretch and grow. One of my most satisfying experiences was playing a male character in ‘The Tempest’ at Shakespeare Dallas last fall. Now I guess I’ll be taking on the men in the local market, as well!
“Acting is very competitive, but in Shaklee there is no competition, only inclusiveness, opportunity, and inspiration. Each of us is limited only by her imagination. Personal growth is a very important component of our work in Shaklee, so my colleagues and I encourage each other to dream big and become a match for the things we desire to manifest in our lives.”
Who is your she-ro?
“My she-ro is Nobel Laureate, Wangari Maathai. Champion of women’s rights and environmental activist, she was the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2004, our company had the honor of partnering with her in Shaklee’s global environmental initiative, ‘A Million Trees – A Million Dreams’.”
What is your favorite quote?
“No matter who or where we are, or what our capabilities, we are called to do the best we can.” – Wangari Maathai
